What Is a Rimjob? Meaning, Safety and How to Ask

A rimjob, also called rimming or anilingus, means stimulating the outside of the anus with the mouth or tongue. It is something adults of any gender and orientation enjoy, either receiving or giving. Like any oral sex it carries some infection risk, and like anything new it works best when it’s talked about first.
This guide covers what it is and isn’t, how to ask a partner about it without pressure, the safer-sex basics from the CDC, and the few products that are actually useful. It replaces our separate article on how to ask for a rimjob.
What a rimjob is, and what it isn’t
A rimjob is external: lips and tongue on the skin around the anus. It doesn’t automatically include fingers, toys or penetration, and agreeing to it doesn’t mean agreeing to any of those. Saying exactly what you mean avoids the most common misunderstanding.
How to bring it up
Asking for a rimjob is often harder than the act itself. Three things make it easier:
- Pick a calm moment outside of sex, when nobody is rushed or already undressed. A message can work if that is how you two talk about sex.
- Be specific and ask, don’t hint. For example: “I’ve been curious about rimming. Is that something you’d ever want to try, giving or receiving?”
- Offer a maybe. “Is this a yes, a no, or a maybe for later?” Many people need time or information first.
A yes might be
- “Yes, receiving only”
- “Yes, with a dental dam”
- “Yes, but stop if I say pause”
A no or maybe deserves
- a simple “thanks for telling me”
- no repeated asking or bargaining
- a check-in later only if they invited it
Consent has to be freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic and specific; Planned Parenthood sums this up as FRIES. RAINN adds that it’s an ongoing process, not a one-off yes. Never frame it as a test (“you would if you loved me”).
Safer-sex basics
Some STIs can pass through oral sex, and the CDC says barriers reduce, but don’t remove, that risk. A rimjob adds gut bacteria to the list: the CDC’s Shigella guidance for sexually active people specifically recommends barriers during oral-anal sex.

Preparation: less than you think
Before a rimjob, a shower or a gentle wash with warm water and mild, unscented soap is enough. Planned Parenthood notes that douching isn’t necessary and can irritate, so treat it as optional. Skip numbing creams and strong fragrances on sensitive skin. Keep a towel and a dam within reach so you don’t have to stop and search.

Rimjob questions
What does rimjob mean?
Using the mouth or tongue on the outside of the anus. It is also called rimming or anilingus. On its own it doesn’t include fingers, toys or penetration.
Can you get an infection from a rimjob?
Yes, it carries real infection risks, including some STIs and gut infections such as Shigella. A barrier like a dental dam lowers the risk, and the CDC advises washing before and after and avoiding sex while either partner has diarrhea.
How do you use a dental dam for rimming?
Lay it flat over the anus before any mouth contact, keep the same side facing the body, and throw it away afterwards. Use a new one if you switch to another body part or person.
Do I need to douche first?
No. Gentle washing of the outside with warm water and mild, unscented soap is enough for oral contact. Planned Parenthood notes that douching isn’t necessary and can irritate.
How do I ask my partner for a rimjob?
Bring it up outside of sex, say exactly what you mean, and ask whether it’s a yes, a no or a maybe. Make it easy to say no, and don’t ask again and again.
Is a flavored spray safe to use?
A water-based flavored spray only changes the taste. It doesn’t make the activity safer and doesn’t replace a barrier. Check the ingredients if either partner has sensitive skin.
