Anal Douche Guide: Do You Need One, and How to Do It Gently

An anal douche is a small bulb or bottle with a nozzle that rinses the lower rectum with water before anal play. The first thing to know is that you don’t have to: Planned Parenthood says anal douching isn’t necessary, and that doing it too often or too harshly can hurt you. Washing the outside with mild soap and water is enough for most people.
If you still prefer to use an anal douche first, the goal is gentle and occasional, not a deep clean. Here is how to do it with less risk, and which kind of anal douche to choose.
If you choose to douche: a gentle routine
- Fill the anal douche with plain lukewarm water (no soap, no additives).
- Put a little water-based lube on the nozzle.
- Over the toilet or in the shower, insert only the tip and squeeze slowly.
- Hold briefly, then release into the toilet.
- Repeat a couple of times until the water runs mostly clear, then stop. More rinsing isn’t better.
- Stop straight away if you feel sharp pain or see blood.

Care
Clean your anal douche after every use: take it apart where possible, wash each piece in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and let it air-dry with the nozzle off so no water sits inside. Replace it if it cracks or stays cloudy.
