Magic Wand Original HV-260 Massager

The Magic Wand Original (model HV-260) is the plug-in wand Vibratex still sells in close to its original form: a white body with a blue neck, a soft vinyl head about 2¼ inches across, a two-position speed switch and a 6-foot cord. There is no battery to charge and no button menu. Plug it in, slide the switch to I or II, and it runs at about 5,000 or 6,000 RPM.

It is the most basic wand in our Magic Wand range. Before you order, it helps to know what it doesn’t do: there are no vibration patterns, no gentle low setting and no cordless option, and it only works on 110-120V power. Imitations of this wand are common. Vibratex’s authorized retailer gives two quick checks (the logo and the colours), and the genuine HV-260 also carries its model number. An authentic Magic Wand Original has:

• the Magic Wand logo with the circled ® registered-trademark mark
• a white handle and body, a blue neck and a white head
• the model number HV-260, a switch marked O / I / II and a US polarized plug (one blade wider than the other)

The manufacturer says a genuine Magic Wand Original comes only from authorized resellers. It was once sold as the Hitachi Magic Wand; the same wand is now sold under the Magic Wand name.

The switch in the middle of the Magic Wand Original’s handle has three positions. Centre (O) is off. Slide it toward the cord for I, the low speed of about 5,000 vibrations a minute, or toward the head for II, about 6,000. Vibratex asks you to make sure it’s set to O before you plug it in.

The rule that surprises most new owners is the time limit. The HV-260 manual rates the Magic Wand Original for a maximum of 25 minutes of continuous running. Longer than that and the case heats up and can warp or break down. To keep going, switch it off and let it rest for more than 30 minutes. The manual also asks you to:

• rest the side of the head against the body rather than pressing hard, because heavy pressure can bend the head support and doesn’t make it any stronger
• keep it off soft surfaces like a bed or couch, and out from under blankets and pillows, so the air openings stay clear
• unplug it whenever you aren’t using it, and never leave it running unattended

In short: the Magic Wand Original is the pick if a cord doesn’t bother you and you like it strong. If 5,000 RPM is more than you want as a starting point, the Plus begins at about 2,700. The Magic Wand Original’s design reached the US in 1968 as a body massager for tension and sore muscles, and the HV-260 manual still reads that way: its diagrams cover the shoulders, arms, back and legs. It is better known as an external vibrator, and that is how most people use it now. The manual keeps it off the chest, the throat and thyroid, and any swollen or inflamed skin. Vibratex also asks anyone who is pregnant, has a pacemaker or another implanted device, or has a history of blood clots to check with a doctor first.

The Magic Wand Original is mains-powered, so water is the main thing to avoid. Don’t use it in the bath or shower, on wet skin, or anywhere it could fall into a sink. To clean it, unplug it, set the switch to O and wipe the head and body with a damp, not wet, cloth. Skip benzine, lacquer thinner and other solvents. Store it somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. If you want a wand you can rinse, Vibratex makes a separate Waterproof model, which we don’t stock at the moment.

How can I tell if a Magic Wand is authentic?

Check three things: the Magic Wand logo with the circled ® mark, the colours (white handle and body, blue neck, white head), and the model number HV-260 for the corded Magic Wand Original. Vibratex says authentic wands come only from authorized resellers, so a very cheap listing from an unknown seller is a warning sign.

Should I use lube with a Magic Wand?

The Magic Wand Original manual doesn’t mention lube. It does tell you not to use the wand on a wet part of the body or while your body is wet, and never to wash it with water. The vinyl head is cleaned with a damp cloth, so keep liquids away from the body and the switch.

Is the Magic Wand Original good?

The Magic Wand Original does one job well: strong, deep two-speed vibration from a wall outlet, with nothing to charge or program. Its limits are just as clear. It has no patterns, its low setting is still about 5,000 RPM, it needs a 110-120V outlet, and it has to rest after 25 minutes.

Which Magic Wand is the best?

It depends on what you need. Pick the Magic Wand Original if you want two strong speeds and a cord. The Plus adds two gentler speeds and a silicone head while keeping the cord. The Rechargeable adds a battery and four patterns. The Mini is the smallest and cordless. The comparison table above has prices from our store.

Can I use the Magic Wand Original outside the US?

Not on its own. The manual says not to use any power source other than 110-120V AC at 60Hz, and the plug is a US polarized type. In 220-240V countries a plug adapter alone isn’t enough. The Magic Wand Plus has a 100-240V cord if you travel.

Why does it get hot?

The motor and case warm up as it runs, and Vibratex rates the Magic Wand Original for no more than 25 minutes of continuous use. After that, switch it off and wait more than 30 minutes. Don’t run it under a blanket or on a soft bed where the air openings can be blocked.
